Our gallant U14 girls are league champions. They battled out a tough win against a determined Castlerahan/Denn side. They weren’t going to denied with some staunch defending against bigger opponents and they got the scores that counted at the other end. Brilliant performance and well done to all the players and coaches. The club is proud of ye all.
On a warm Wednesday evening in Terrycoyle Park, an exciting girls U14 final took place between Killygarry and Castlerahan / Denn. These teams are becoming very familiar with each other, having already played three times in 2016.
The first half started brightly for the Killygarry lassies, notching up an impressive 2-06 against 0-02 by half time. Killygarry were very much on top at this stage despite some wayward shooting. The defence was resolute as always, the message being if no goals are conceded, victory would be theirs. In the first half Castlerahan/Denn were throwing all they had at Killygarry with little reward. The main threats were being subdued by some excellent marking by Killygarry.
The second half saw a different Castlerahan/Denn, a more focussed outfit and they threw all they had at the Crubany girls. Again, as has happened all year with Killygarry, the defence were not going to be beaten and goals were not going to be easy. The first ten minutes of the second half saw Castlerahan/Denn at their most dangerous as they tried to claw their way back. Despite extreme pressure the Killygarry girls moved up a gear, introduced some fresh legs and took control. Killygarry were not going to be beaten and the league title was added to the County Féile title on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-07. There were heroes in every black and red jersey on view. Everybody gave their all, and more. The girls should be extremely proud of their efforts. They dug deep when required to show why the only word applicable to them is WINNERS.
It is evident this group are a little special and will have no fear in the national Feile competition at the end of June in Kerry. Killygarry captain Emer Cahill lifted the cup to herald another victory and another box ticked for 2016. Next stop All-Ireland Féile on June 24th.
