TEAM NEWS
Mens:
SENIORS
Killygarry (1-04) V Cavan Gaels (1-07)*
ACFL Div. 1, Round 2.
3G Pitch, Breffni Park.
Cavan Gaels and Killygarry met on the 3G pitch on Sunday last in an exciting game that could have gone either way. The 5 o’clock start meant that the game was played under lights and in rainy conditions but the mood was not dampened as both teams made this a thrilling encounter that had everything a G.A.A. supporter expects from a local derby.
The Gaels got off to the stronger start in the game when Michael Lyng palmed a hand-passed ball into the Killygarry net, opening the Gaels scoring after just 5mins. However, Killygarry quickly responded with a long range score from Fergal Clarke. The Gaels attempted to assert their authority on the game and a volleyed point from Declan Meehan, followed up by a point from Michael Lyng sent the Gaels into a four point lead after 10mins. Another long range Killygarry effort, this time coming from Martin Reilly, narrowed the deficit, but the Gaels struck two more unanswered points to leave the score 1-04 to 0-02 at half time.
During the half time break Killygarry seemed to find a renewed energy. They came out in heavy rain to score two points (Shane Kelly and Martin Reilly) and a well worked goal (Shane Kelly) without response from the Gaels. With the scores level Killygarry’s confidence grew and the scene was set for an exciting final quarter. Declan Meehan managed to end the Gaels quiet period as he pointed to put the Gaels back into the lead.
As tension built, an off the ball incident left a Killygarry player stretched out, only to be replaced later in the game by Michael McGovern. With some heavy tackles going in, tempers eventually spilled over and both Michael Lyng and Padraig Cahill were shown red cards as they tussled off the ball. The disorder lead to Killygarry losing shape and the Gaels took advantage to add two points to their tally in the closing stages to leave the score 1-07 to 1-04 at the finish.
This was a hard fought game with both teams showing a hunger to gain valuable league points. On the day the Gaels managed to edge out a tenacious Killygarry side in a wonderful game of football that was marred only by a couple of incidences of ill-discipline.
